LYEONNA'S BIRTHDAY

October 10 2008, Yona offically become a teenager.... her 13th birthday.
We didn't planned any birthday party or even small 'makan' as the day was school day and that night too was the exact night Lydia's concert was held.
Tickets for the concert/dinner was at RM50 each but that didn't ditter anyone from buying. Infact all tickets were sold up days ahead and I only managed to get one for myself. Poor Yona, she wanted so much to go.
In the end thou, she did tagged along but had to sit a bit further away from the dinner table (upstage with the rest of the preformers).

I had bought her a birthday cake and we sort of blew candles during lunch time. Just for the sake of making that once a year birthday wish.
Andrew came back from KK in the evening with another surprise birthday cake though.
Guess she'll be getting two wishes this year.

The cake that I got for her.....

This is the one that Andrew got her...

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE NAME SABAH

This is an article taken from the New Straits Time. I just feel that as Sabahan, It's something we should read .

Getting to root of the name Sabah
By : Jaswinder Kaur

FROM "North Borneo" to "Sabah", just how did the state get its name?

The quest to discover the origins of Sabah's name took me deep into the Internet and volumes of journals and articles.

My first stop was the search engine Google which took me to websites on names for babies. Sabah, the websites explained, is a girl's name and means morning in Arabic. In Africa, it refers to the sunrise.

The only reference in the Internet to how Sabah got its name is detailed in a couple of blogs, with information pieced together from a variety of sources.

One blog entry claimed the name was widely used in the 15th century when Sabah was part of Brunei and that it referred to pisang saba, a type of banana which grew well along the coast.

Interestingly, Seludang cropped up as an old name for Sabah. According to a blog, it was used in reference to this region in a Javanese poem dating back to 1365.

Obviously, I couldn't get all the information I needed on the Web, so I went to the Sabah state library.

In volume seven of the 1981-1982 Sabah Society Journal, I found a nine-page article by Allen R. Maxwell titled The Origin of the Name Sabah.

Maxwell did not mention the banana theory but he dismissed the numerous theories and meanings ascribed to the name Sabah in published literature as "fanciful suggestions" because there was a lack of supporting evidence.

He said a study on the subject suggested that Sabah was derived from the Malay word sabak which is the place for or act of boiling to extract palm sugar. Again, he ruled out this theory due to lack of evidence.

Maxwell also says that in Bruneian Malay, saba means downstream but other studies say it means upstream. Sabah is located to the northwest, or upstream of Brunei.

"The other sense of meaning of the word saba, and the one which specifically gives rise to the name of the state of Sabah, is much less general, and refers specifically to the northern portion of the island of Borneo.

"The published literature abounds in examples of this usage, but different authors seem to place an almost endless variety of only slightly different interpretations on this sense of meaning," Maxwell adds.

"Various authors indicate that Sabah is a local name, a Malay name, an old Malay name, a native name, an old native name or an indigenous and Brunei people's name; a name referring to portions of the northwest coast of Borneo, northern Borneo, north of Brunei, or the territory of the British North Borneo Company."

A few days later, I found myself flicking through old books at a small corner of the Sabah Museum library.

I came across Volume Four of the Sabah Society Journal 1969-70 which had an article titled The Prehistory of Sabah by Tom and Barbara Harrisson.

According to the authors, most names in Borneo had their roots buried in prehistory, and were "beyond any hope of further disentanglement".

"Most Sabahans take their state's title for granted. They are wise to do so... Sabah is better considered as a word of obscure local origin," the Harrissons wrote.

Realising that I was not likely to get any more answers, my attention turned to why, after being called North Borneo for 82 years from the time of the British North Borneo Chartered Company in 1881 until independence in 1963, the state's name was changed to Sabah.

In the state's annual report for 1963, published the following year, it was stated that the legislative council had voted unanimously that the British colony should become independent on Aug 31 under the name of Sabah, but it did not give any reasons. From that date, North Borneo became known officially as Sabah.

Former Sabah state secretary Tan Sri Richard Lind, who was in the civil service during British rule, told me that the matter of changing North Borneo's name to Sabah was raised well before independence by the late Tun Mustapha Harun, who later went on to serve as head of state and chief minister.

"There was a lot of objections from Governor Roland Turnbull who said the whole world already knew North Borneo.

"It took over two years and there was a debate over it," Lind said.

He said the word Sabah was not commonly used during British rule but that the Native Courts called the region negeri Sabah.

"I served as a district officer once and I know that the native courts used the word Sabah. They never called it North Borneo," he said.

I also found a book published five years before the state's independence, called Sabah Men At Work, in the North Borneo Social Studies series which indicated that the name Sabah was known to the public.

A much earlier use of the name was in Joseph Hatton's book The New Ceylon, being a sketch of British North Borneo, or Sabah in 1881.

As Maxwell had pointed out, the study of the origin of place names can be fascinating, informative and rewarding

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT

This is how it looks as I first saw it...
Bakawali... Bunga Raja...Ric Rac cactus...
queen of the night...Epiphyllum anguliger.

By ten the next morning....
I had the most wonderful feeling going through me after seeing this plant that has been growing around my garden without much care bloom for the first time. Quite by accident that I stumbled upon the blooming process sometime around 9 p.m. about a month ago . It was already almost to it's full bloom when I saw it.
It has been in my collection of plants for years but have never gotten much attention from me. It's a 'messy' plant and all I ever did was prune it in order to keep it to a managable size. I don't quite remember where the original 'mother' plant is now but I know this plant is a cutting that I have cast away and had managed to survive in a giant pot meant for a bouganvilla plant. It was growing strong and healthy that I somehow let it be each time I weed the pot.

Maybe blooming was a sign that I should give it more than a thought now. I have heard friends talked about how beautiful the flower is but have never really seen one bloom before... more so one that is planted in my garden.
It's really an easy /not much bother to grow plant (hidup sendiri lah kira).

To see it in full bloom is truly a rare sight to behold evenif they don't last very long. Just a night to be exact ( thus the name queen of the night). I was all wilted by noon.
There is a saying that abundance luck beholds for the owner should his or her plant ever bloom.... (me la tu konon). I saw Andrew 'talk' to the flower while 'hitting' it with his four D tickets.... ha ha ha kena patan.
I decided to write about this event as yesterday it bloom again.
Second time ?... aha... double abundance luck lah ni.. ( mega toto draw is up to it's max RM20million.. mungkin tunggu aku tu)

)

This is the second bloom... I managed to catch it at its fullest bloom

.... and I managed a picture with the flower eventhough it was a little bit dark.
Beautiful right?.... the flower la

CONFUCIUS SAY.......

I just thought these sayings are worth sharing... ( must be 21yrs and above or maybe those who can understand the true meaning of each saying)

'FUNNY' NOTICES

This picture has been in my phone for a long long time. Probably about two to three years. I kept it because it's one of those notices that can make me cough a little laugher and one that I had personally came across with.
No doubt I do get the message through but it's still sounds 'funny'.
This notice was displayed at Sandakan's airport terminal during the time of it's renovation. It was pasted near to the toilets outside the inspection door as not to miss anyone's sight. I'm sure someone reading this have seen it too.
I saw it ( and read- again and again ) on many ocassions on the many times I waited for my flights there before the idea to picture it came to mind.
I'm glad I did too... I can now blog about it and my MAS friends can't deny about it...... ha ha kan kan aku bilang?

This one was taken a bit recent. It was displayed at the KFC outlet at Giant Sandakan. My daughter was reading and laughing at the same time when she alerted us. I had to picture it for rememberance too. One of the girls at KFC looked embarrassed ( I assumed she must have been the one who composed it) as Andrew pointed out the mistake. It wasn't there anymore two days later when we went for another visit.

ANOTHER NORMAL WEEK AND A PLACE TO 'TRY OUT'

It's been days since I last wrote anything here. I have been a little busy doing Yona's 'projects'.... (yes....mom's doing her homework..(bukan selalu, kes TERpaksa saja ni so cigu cigu jangan marah ya)).
It just irritate me to know that she had the whole week long hari raya holidays to do them but waited till the last minute ( exact word) to make the move.
We had attended a friend's open house on sunday night and was only at home at around ten in the evening. Imagine my shock when she said her 'skirt' was due tomorrow. Haaaaaaah?????....
luckly for her.... I have a talent for sewing ( che che che...). It only took me about an hour or so to complete the process. That includes the embroidery part.
NEXT... her geography folio...
luckly (again).... I can operate the pc... (ha ha) Yea... all extract from the net. By the time I was done , it was way past three in the morning.
Next day was wasted to compensate the night's sleep.

The week went through very fast...the normal thing.
Eating... sleeping....eating....sleeping.... ( normal right? )Don't forget The Amazing Race Asia... he he...

Oh I did went out to check another 'new' eating outlet. What used to be A&W is now a new eatery... THE BOS. It's located opposite Parkwell hypermart, next to Buku Indah at Bandar Indah.
I made up my mind to like it based on the following...

1. The ambiance I got the moment I entered the place

2. The choices were endless. The menu was a foot long with indecation of what's the house's favourite and also the chef's recommendation.

3. The food was really...really great. Unless I was really 'that' hungry on that day.

4. The price range was very affordable. It surprised me that they charged so low for such quality. I wondered if they'll make any profit at all.

5. Internet access ( I saw the sign on the wall )

Check this out...the tropical blah blah blah...the name slipped my mind. It's just ice cream with lots of different fruit slices. It's how it was presented that makes the impression.I made myself eat the honey dew slices as well.... (yuk yuk)

Here's additional ice cream for me.... double scoop chocolate ice cream...Hhmm I was so sure I ordered yam....The bowl or should I say 'tub' it was served in was so cute.

For the 'not so hungry' Yona.... the chicken porrage

Tisha tried the Lemon Chicken

This is the prawn omelette.Andrew's choice. It's also listed as one of the house's favourites. The crab omlette is listed as chef's recommended ( sorry no eat crab!)

HA HA HA... I CAN DO IT AS WELL

This is for laugh. My girls says this is the 'in' pose for youngsters nowadays.
Ha ha ha... I think I can be overlooked for one here( Perasaan ni!)
too bad my phone is not that good... you can't see the 'lines'
HOW ITS DONE:
Photo must be self taken with your cell pnone... head down...look up and smile or make funny lips gesture.

LET'S GO TO HAWAII

My brother's chicken chop

Laura's choice..... Mexican... something. She said the gravy was very nice

Mom's choice... Lamb Shoulders

This was my choice.. the mix grill.. Lamb, chicken and beef

This was the day's soup...corn soup with real crab meat ( how unfortunate we don't eat crab).

Ha ha... don't get me wrong. I didn't really mean Hawaii as in the island of Hawaii.... just an eating outlet that I think worth mentioning here. A small Cafe below the Grand View Hotel located at Jalan Dua.
My last visit was on the eve of Hari Raya. Of all the days to go into town, my dad had to ask me to meet up with some lawyer for some document signing on this day. A ten minute task. I wanted to go in the afternoon as I knew the traffic would be real heavy (I used to work in town and I knew how traffic was in the morning on the eve on any celebration).
But..... there was no saying 'no' to my mom once she has made up her mind. NOW!
Its already almost noon by the time we did reach town. Was lucky my brother(and his girlfriend Laura) was here. He ended up as our driver. Phew!!... traffic was heavy as expected ( I TOLD YOU ALL SO... talking about rubbing it in, I had fun saying those words over and over). To make matter worse, the aircond wasn't working and... the road tax expired two days ago!.
My brother took a wrong turn (mom's instructions) so to avoid going trough traffic jam twice, I walked . As I've said , it was done in ten minutes.

Midday means... lunch time. We got the choice to go either for steam fish or set lunch. We opt for the latter cos it was the nearest place to where we (luckly)managed to get a parking space . Did I mentioned it was a sunny... hot .... hot afternoon?.. it was.(Hawaii is fully airconditoned!)
I have set my mind on the set lunch even before entering the cafe wherelse 'they' (mom, brother & Laura) flipped the menu over and over for choices. In the end they decided with the same choice as mine although they vary the main dish choice.
For the price of RM10.50++ for a set... it was worth it. I have forgotten to take picture of the dessert after enjoying the main meal. The total meal also include coffee or tea.
